A simple, safety-first checklist for new gun owners covering range prep, fundamentals, and responsible ownership.
☐ Confirm unloaded – remove magazine, lock the action open, visually and physically check the chamber.
☐ Ammunition check – bring the correct caliber/gauge only. Keep ammo in factory boxes.
☐ Eye & ear protection – bring both. If shooting indoors, plan to double up (earplugs + earmuffs).
☐ Basic cleaning kit – bore brush, patches, light oil, rag. You don’t need fancy tools.
☐ Range bag basics – targets, stapler/tape, small flashlight, water.
☐ Know your firearm – understand how to lock it open and where the safety is before arriving.
☐ Muzzle discipline – always pointed downrange, even when unloaded.
☐ Finger indexed – finger straight along the frame until sights are on target and you’re ready to shoot.
☐ Action open when not shooting – chamber flag if required.
☐ Follow range commands immediately – when in doubt, stop and ask.
☐ Never rush – speed comes later. Safety comes first.
☐ Start close – 3–7 yards for pistols, pattern shotguns first.
☐ Grip before upgrades – a solid grip matters more than accessories.
☐ Slow trigger press – smooth and controlled, no jerking.
☐ Watch the sights – not the target.
☐ Expect recoil – don’t fight it, manage it.
☐ Buying upgrades before learning fundamentals
☐ Over-oiling the firearm
☐ Mixing calibers on the bench
☐ Being afraid to ask the range officer for help
☐ Trying to impress others instead of learning
☐ Unload and verify clear before packing up
☐ Wipe down – remove residue, lightly oil contact points
☐ Function check after cleaning
☐ Store safely – unloaded, secured, ammo stored separately if possible
• Safety is a habit, not a rule list
• Confidence comes from repetition, not gear
• Responsible ownership protects you and everyone around you
Keep this checklist in your range bag or phone notes until safety becomes automatic.

FAQ
